The clock is ticking for ISDN, The VoIP switchover begins.

Since the late 80’s and early 90’s many businesses have chosen ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) for their business communications. But what is ISDN? In a nutshell, it is essentially circuit switched technology and has been a popular go-to connection for any business requiring more than one phone line in their office. It also delivers voice and data over the same connection.

So why are Openreach retiring ISDN?

Openreach is planning to retire all ISDN AND PSTN by 2025.

ISDN connections are generally delivered over existing copper wiring which is prone to fault, such as water ingress and interference, which for many businesses can cause a great deal of disruption to their service. There have also been a lot of innovations since ISDN was first introduced.

Introducing VoIP.

VoIP is a fantastic replacement for traditional ISDN for a number of reasons. The main one being that data is delivered over the internet making it faster and more efficient.

Increasing the capacity is also easier and almost instant versus having to arrange an engineer visit which can be both costly and time-consuming. This is great for growing businesses who can add new numbers to their team a lot quicker and cheaper.

VoIP is also not restricted to any one geographical location so businesses that need to move offices can take their number with them, making it less hassle for both their customers and suppliers.
